3d-touchscreenForget 3D TVs, looks like we will soon experience 3D touchscreen. A research team from Japan has reportedly developed the world’s first touchscreen 3D television system! The new technology will let users pinch, poke and touch images floating in front of them.

Japanese scientists say that this new 3D touchscreen technology will bring objects to life and can be programmed to respond to many gestures. Senior scientist Norio Nakamura, at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology said, “It is the first time that you can feel images in the air. You can have the sense of touch like poking a rubber ball or stretching a sticky rice cake when manipulating images”.

Scientists hope that this technology could be used in a range of ways including medicine and surgery. Gaming is also seen as a major market for this technology which could allow players a touch of realism. “This technology could create a virtual museum where visitors, including vision-impaired people, can put their hands on valuable sculptures that are usually untouchable,” Nakamura said.

Scientists said that the technology works by changing the shape of a  three-dimensional image in response to a gesture which is sensed by cameras.
