mcafee_intelIntel today announced that it has acquired anti-virus giant McAfee for $7.68 billion in cash. Intel also said that it will merge McAfee into its software unit at Intel. Analysts predict that Intel will soon be launching its own software platform supported by strong anti-virus support.

Intel is also said to be working on security towards its hardware and software products and sees this merger as a way to enhance its security. In the statement it said that almost all the internet devices needed proper security at the hardware, software and network level.

Intel bought McAfee by paying a premium of 60 percent over the share with each share at $48. Intel is said to put more focus on “hardware-enhanced” security and with the increase of sophisticated threats requires a major boost towards its anti-virus technologies.
