android-logo-itgruntsToday Canalys, a market research firm released its Q4 for 2010 global smart phone market data report based on induvidual countries. The report showed that Symbian was overtaken by Android as the top smartphone platform globally. Apart from Android, Nokia was placed in the top spot as the leading smartphone vendor.

The report said that global shipments of Android smart phones reached 32.9 million while devices running Nokia’s Symbian was right behind it with 31 million worldwide. Apple stood third with about 16.2 million phones sold while RIM came the fourth with 14.2 million.

This is a huge boost for Android when compared to 2009 where Google ws the fourth at 4.7 million. Overall numbers of smart phones rose from 53.7 million in Q4 2009 to 101.2 million in Q4 2010.
