Looks like Microsoft is finally giving into the high demand of Open source linux machines and is preparing an expansion of the Windows Azure virtual machine hosting technology that will let customers run either Windows or Linux virtual machines. ARS reported today that Microsoft is also gearing up to allow applications like SQL Server and SharePoint.

Azure is similar to the type of VM hosting offered by Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud, but has many restrictions as in the complexity is hidden for developers who focus on building applications.

What does all this mean? Customers who want to run Windows or Linux in VMs on Microsoft’s Azure platform-as-a-service platform will be able to do. This only means Microsoft is opening up to allow other open source operating systems which is a good thing!
