1000-core-processor

1000-core-processorScientists have invented a new ultra fast 1000-core processor that does 1000-core processing on a single chip. The new computer chip is now the world’s fastest processor on a single-chip. It is 20 times faster than the modern desktop computer and can process up to 5 GB of data in one second.

Dual-core and Quad-core processors are very common these days. There are also 8-core and 16-core processors for servers and other high-end machines. Scientists also say that the new “super” computer chip is energy efficient and green. It uses far for computing despite being extremely powerful. This was possible by using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) chip that contains millions of tiny transistors.

FPGA allows the user to actually configure specific circuits to customize performance. Scientists used this to divide the chip into different groups and each of these groups was assigned a specific task.

The chip contains more than 1,000 mini-circuits each acting as a processor core. Dr. Wim Vanderbauwhede of the University of Glasgow and his colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Lowell designed the processor. Dr. Wim said, “Yeah, well. I will be so extremely delighted to have this one for my computer some fine day, soon. And with all due faith, I’d presume it wouldn’t have to struggle to find itself any takers should the inventors plan to manufacture it on a greater scale, other than lab purposes.”
