Looks like not everyone is happy with the success of technology giants like Apple, HP and Dell. Foxconn technologyfoxconn-line group that operates Taiwan’s Hon Hai group is being investigated by Apple, HP and Dell after a mounting number of suicides were committed by its workers.

The technology giants said that they were concerned about the working conditions at Hon Hai who is one of their largest contract manufacturers. Eight workers of Hon Hai committed suicide and all were aged below 25 and were with Hon Hai for an year. Co-workers blame the management that Hon Hai was being run as a sweat-shop.

A spokesman from Apple said in a statement that “Apple is saddened and upset” by the suicides and is working on evaluating the working conditions and the measures that Hon Hai takes to address the issue. HP and Dell are investigating on the working conditions of the Hon Hai group which is one of the worlds largest contract electronic manufacturers.

Hon Hai is reportedly taking measures to safeguard its business and workers following this incident but in an unsual way by asking its workers to sign documents promising the company that they will not commit suicide. They also would have to agree to be institutionalised if they appeared in an “abnormal mental or physical state for the protection of myself and others”.

Analysts in Taiwan predict that this will bring more bad press to Apple and HP. Apple has been in the media for quite some time for a few wrong reasons. The recent incidents with the lost iphone 4 and others have surely brought it unneeded attention in the public including the federal governement.

Needless to say the working conditions at Hon Hai have to be worked on. As Apple and other technology giants brag about their success in the market, the working conditions on the other side of the world, from the people who put together that flashy iphone in your pocket or that ipad in you bag are sufferring.

Does it make it worth buying these products then? Its a question we all need to answer.

  1. Yeah huge corporations are always “saddened and upset” when they get bad press,

  2. Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!
