Are we there yet? Today Western Digital, a computer hardware manufacturing firm announced the WD VelociRaptor,wd velociraptor a next generation 10,000 RPM SATA hard drive.

Available in 450 GB and 600 GB configurations, the new drive is designed for use in blade servers and high performance machines and is also targetted at the gamer’s market.

The drive is built with enterprise class mechanics and packs upto 600 GB in a 2.5 inch form factor.

Another version of form factor which is about 3.5 inches is also available which includes a cooling shell to reduce the heat generated by the drive.

Some of the features include 6Gb/s interface with a 32 MB enhanced cache, double the available hard drive space, upto 1.4 million hours of mean time between failures (MTBF), energy efficient, built in heat sink option are some of the few.

The two models, WD4500HLHX and WD6000HLHX are available at select resellers and are priced at about $299 for 450 GB and $329 for 600 GB.
